Makeup doesn’t come with an expiration date, but it should. It’s a good idea to update, replace, or add to your makeup palette as the seasons change, or at least annually. At some point you need to look at that matte turquoise shadow or Pepto-pink Hello Kitty collab lipstick you’ve acquired and ask, “when am I ever going to wear this?” If your response is, “definitely on Halloween,” or “I can give it to someone,” then store that item safely in your trash can.
You really only need a few things—the day-to-day items you can’t live without, and a few seasonal alternatives. Bright lipstick and plum shadow are topping my list for spring ’12, and are easy to incorporate with items you may already have.
I enlisted the help of the local beauty experts at Rouge Cosmetics, who took to their makeup charts to show us exactly how to pull these color palettes off:

Look #1: The Bright Lip
Inspiration: Diane Kruger at the 17th Annual Critic’s Choice Awards
Eyes:
1) Use Paula Dorf Eye Primer all over the eyelid, and up to the brow bone.
2) Use Glo Eyeshadow Trio’s Champagne Rose “Gold” on the outer corner of the eyelid, Champagne Rose “Pink” on the outer edge of the eyelid, and Champagne Rose “Dusk” in the contour of the eye.
3) Dust a light amount of Stila Mimosa shadow in the contour of the eye, blending it with Champagne Rose “Dusk.”
4) Use Stila Stay All Day liquid eyeliner, applying to the top of lash line, and extending outwards in a wing. Finish it off with a coat of your favorite mascara.
Cheeks:
5) Apply The Balm Hot Mama over the apple of the cheek and the cheek bone.
Lips:
6) Use Bare Minerals Pretty Amazing Lip in Ambition.
7) Coat with Stila Sparkle Luxe Gloss in Bling.
