Chew this over: The National Retail Federation recently reported that Americans are expected to spend $370 million on Halloween costumes for their pets this year—that’s $70 million more than last year. To marry some political and economic terminology, let’s call it the “lipstick on a pug effect.”
According to the same report, pumpkins, hot dogs, and devils were best-sellers last year. And since predicting human fashion trends is nowhere near as fun, I’m eager to call it right now: this is the year of the bee. Not a bear in a bee costume. Not a fish. A regular bee*.
