In celebration of Forty Winks’ “Upgrade Your Intimates” party this weekend, I’ve thrown together a little how-to on bra selection. It can be tricky, and this season’s sheer and cut-out shirt trends don’t make things any easier. Luckily, the ladies at Forty Winks will be on hand this Friday (armed with great deals), to help you grab the right bras for the right garments, with styles that will take you through spring and beyond.

Credits: All bras available at Forty Winks; Boulee green top and Brandy Melville sweater, available at Crush Boutique.
From top to bottom:
Sheer: Embrace the sheer! Always turning to a camisole is a cop out, and let’s be honest, most garments don’t look great with a cami unless they came with one. Those full coverage, skin-tone bras make it look like you’re trying to cover up translucent fabric, rather than owning it. If you go with a bra that’s both feminine and delicate, then you can wear color or black bras under a sheer top. This Lucky Doll Triangle Bra by Huit ($62) is perfectly sweet and has a nice sheen to it. Now, just so I don’t get backlash for increased cat calls: there is such thing as too sheer– go for a top that looks more opaque in dim lighting, and stick to bras that are pretty, but not overtly sexy. The right bra makes this a subtle, classy look. If you’re still unsure, a simple change to the rest of your outfit can make all the difference too: wear hair up in a bun, instead of down, or go for denim and flats, rather than short skirts and heels.
Cut-out: Cut-out sleeves and shoulders are everywhere right now, so it’s the perfect time to get thee a good strapless like the Strapless Push Up Bra by On Gossamer ($44). Don’t even think about trying to nudge your bra under a strategically-placed cut-out. And don’t you dare think about clear straps! They look good on no one, and under no thing. If they came with your bra, go ahead and chuck ‘em.
Keyhole: I love how this sweater is unassuming from the front, but features a little surprise in the back. The Pow Wow Bralet by Zinke ($58) provides a pop up color, and is missing the clasps in the back, which keeps it from screaming “BRA!!” in the very place that would scream it. The bralet style also has no underwire, which is great under loose sweaters.
